about

A compilation of live recordings, primarily from the Knitting Factory “What is Jazz?” Festival in 1996, this is the first recording of the Jessica Jones Quartet, featuring its California iteration of Jessica & Tony Jones on sax, with the adventurous rhythm section of bassist Trevor Dunn and drummer Elliot Kavee. Of historic interest is the fact that this is recorded before all four of the members moved to New York City in the following years. Additional pieces are included from a performance at San Jose State University and on KPFA radio, two great institutions supporting creative jazz on the west coast. Released by Nine Winds records, due to the grace of Vinny Golia, another great west coast institution supporting creative music.

Originally, the Knitting Factory recordings were not going to be included on the CD, but Elliot convinced Jessica that the spontaneous fire was worth documenting.
